AZEI and Smart Cities Network Collaborate on SMU Student Internship Program to Strengthen Carbon Governance in Indonesia
The Asosiasi Zero Emisi Indonesia (AZEI) has established a collaboration with Smart Cities Network Ltd (SCN) to host nine undergraduate students from Singapore Management University (SMU) under the ASEAN Internship Program (AIP).
The internship program will run for approximately five weeks, from early December 2025 to mid-January 2026. AZEI will serve as the host organization, providing local supervision and coordination for the students during the program, with support from the Smart Cities Network internship coordination team.
This collaboration represents a follow-up initiative linked to the Forum Carbon 2025, scheduled to take place on 19 November 2025 in Jakarta. The forum highlights the urgent need to strengthen credible, transparent, and data-driven carbon governance systems in support of Indonesia’s transition toward a low-emission economy.
Through this program, the SMU students will work closely with AZEI teams and local partners to support several strategic initiatives related to the development of Indonesia’s technology-driven and data-based carbon ecosystem.
Key focus areas of the internship include the design of data-driven carbon integrity frameworks, particularly digital Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) systems that enable interoperability across carbon project registries. The program will also explore inclusive strategies that enable farmers, fishers, and local cooperatives to participate in carbon financing and community energy programs.
In addition, the students will contribute to the development of the Carbon Impact Terminal, including the structuring of measurable key performance indicators (KPIs), emission reduction dashboards, and artificial intelligence (AI)-based risk scoring models.
The internship will also support the development of the ASEAN Investment Map, an initiative led by Smart Cities Network. Through this effort, the students will help curate a pipeline of Indonesian carbon and renewable energy projects that are ready to attract sustainable financing from global investors.
All internship-related expenses are supported by the Enterprise Singapore Global Ready Talent (GRT) Grant, which covers airfare and accommodation for the participating students during their stay in Jakarta.
This collaboration is expected to strengthen AZEI’s digital and institutional capacity in advancing data-driven carbon governance in Indonesia. It also contributes to the implementation of the Jakarta Compact, which will be launched at Forum Carbon 2025, while increasing the visibility of Indonesian clean energy and carbon projects within the regional investment ecosystem.
The program further supports the engagement of ASEAN youth in applied sustainability research and innovation, while fostering regional collaboration in addressing climate and energy transition challenges.
